“And Ellis remembered thinking he would never meet anyone like him again, and in that acknowledgement, he knew, was love.”

Tin Man by Sarah Winman follows the relationship between Ellis and Michael, from the time they meet as young boys in 1960s Oxford to the present day in 1996. The story puts the pieces of their lives together in a non-linear way that creates snapshots of their lives until we finally see the full picture.

Full of heart and heartbreak, Tin Man is also a love letter to human kindness and friendship. It's quietly filled with little details and everyday mundanity—full of little gestures that can mean the most, and this is what makes this story truly beautiful.

Similar to The Heart’s Invisible Furies in that it follows a gay man and his relationships over several decades, Tin Man is much shorter but still has all of the heart. Would definitely recommend.

“And I wonder what the sound of a heart breaking might be. And I think it might be quiet, unperceptively so, and not dramatic at all. Like the sound of an exhausted swallow falling gently to earth.”
