despite the slow start, by a third through i just couldnt put it down. it's such a good insight on individual multitudes. i like the way it speaks of loneliness alongside grief as a backbone of yearning, it's not something grand, it punches you when you attend to the most miniscule details of life, and it is wonderfully done as mirrored through the characters. michael is always surrounded and adored by the people around him, hes lovely and yet so lonely. the lack of quotation marks definitely threw me off, and at times the conversations are jarred, but i could look past it seeing as how eager i was to continue. i just know id be thinking about this book for a while.

I did not expect this to be a five star read at all but I was pleasantly surprised! Could not tear myself away and ended up reading it in one day.
Goregeous heartbreaking writing and interesting style. It had similar vibes to Call Me By Your Name and to a lesser extent, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous. Definitely worth the read.

This book was beautifully written. It was different than books I typically read and I’m glad for it. The story was compelling; sad and happy at the same time. I enjoyed reading it. It’s a solid 3.5 stars for me. It didn’t resonate with me as much as other books have in the past and I didn’t love the slower pace of the book. But I would still recommend it for those who like character-driven, slow paced books.

This was raved about by Booktubers when it came out in the UK in 2017, so it was already on my to-read shelf when I received an advanced copy in the mail this year, as it was being published in America by G.P.Putnam.
Maybe my expectations were too high. The first part (Ellis) was slow and hazy. It got more interesting in part two (Michael), the story moved a bit more. For a slim book, it took me a long time to finish. Overall I found it depressing. 2.5 stars for some good writing in part two.

“I was thinking about color and light. And I was thinking maybe that’s all we are. Color and light.”
This story is beautiful. I didn’t totally love the writing style (the second half, written in first person, is far superior to the first half, written in third person). I recommend to people who like the work of Sally Rooney and Vincent Van Gogh.
