A quick, honest and unrelentingly romantic novel about loving people, reveling in the beautiful bits of the world and being thankful for the present moment. This book is unassuming, concise and terribly enjoyable despite its more depressing themes. Highly recommend for the reader who needs to be picked out of a slump

A beautiful story about love, friendship, change and becoming sometimes what you wanted to be, sometimes what you feared.

It's tender, exuberant, sad... beautiful. A simple story but, nonetheless, very powerful. And written splendidly; I fell in love with the author's prose and I will go searching for more books by her.

This book was a punch in the heart.

This book gripped you with the prologue and didn't stop. You are devistated by the lives of both Eillis and Michael. The lonliness that Ellis feels now that he is alone in the world is mirrored beautifully by the lonliness that Michael the years leading up to his death as he dealt with not only seeing a partner die of AIDS, but also facing the reality of his own diagnosis.

The book left me wanting more in best way possible.

fongtastic's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 35%

no plot, unengaging, and didn't care about any of the characters or what happened beyond feeling vaguely bad for the main character

The writing was beautiful, but the story just kind of amounted to nothing. I thought I knew what this book was going to be about. The minute I realized
SpoilerMichael was dead
, I lost interest. I wanted a certain kind of story, and instead I got something else. Maybe that's on me - maybe my expectations ruined the final product for me.

On another note, I'll never understand why books feel the need to be artsy in their presentation without good reason. Why no quotation marks, and minimal punctuation? It just makes it harder to read. The minimalist effect shouldn't be there just for funsies. This is a huge pet peeve of mine, so that may also have hindered my enjoyment.

Still, the prose were great, and the relationships felt real. The tragedy hit home for me, so I can't say this was a bad novel by any means.
