Rating this edition, as I was unable to read it since the publisher used a size 6 pt font, an ornate font instead of block style which it made it even harder to read, and cheap ink which made the outlines of letters blurred. As I ordered online, I didn't realize it was unreadable till I actually sat down with it.

Having enjoyed King Solomon's Mines and She, this was a bit of a disappointing adventure by three white guys lording it over the noble savages.

A quaint and enjoyable tale from the pioneer of the lost world genre, predating the likes of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Conan Doyle by 30 years. Haggard's style is easy and straightforward. The world he's built here is not overly fantastical by later standards, and, perhaps as a result, the plotting is relatively free of holes and conveniences. Although set in colonial Africa, it is not as offensively racist as it could have been and is still quite readable if its historical context is kept in mind. 3-1/2 stars.

Not bad, but not amazing either. Quatermain is a good character but sometimes the Victorian nature of these types of books is a bit tiresome (the embedded racism, tendency to go on a bit long sometimes, etc.)

More rip roaring adventures in the sequel to King Solomon's Mines, all the main protaganists from the first story are now older, and getting bored with life, so decide to take on one last adventure into deepest darkest Africa, where they are chased by a tribe intent on killing them all, then discover a remote settlement, and the final showdown to end all final showdowns. Got bogged down a little with the love story part of it, and far too many thou and thees for my liking, but a decent enough finale to round it all out.
