DID NOT FINISH

Idk maybe it’s just a bad translation but I found it kind of bland.

I really enjoyed this book. But there were a few really bothersome things that really annoyed me while I was reading. First of all, the plot is fantastic. It's basically the Hunger Games but with Japanese students, and they all know each other. They aren't strangers thrown together. They've grown up together. And there are 42 students. It's kind of annoying to keep track of all the students and their names, but I definitely still enjoyed how many people were participating. Also, this book didn't seem as showy as the Hunger Games. It was more serious and allegorical, and had a nasty message for China. As serious as this book was, I positively loved all the gory descriptions. Sometimes they seemed unreal, but I love gore, and this book delivered the goods. Despite the fun parts, the romances between players seemed contrived and silly. These students are 14-15 and they're professing intense love and dying for their supposed lover. It was pretty ridiculous. Finally, the author attempted to inject jokes into the players mouths and thoughts at times, and it miserably failed. the jokes were not funny, and they were pretty awkward and unnecessary for the dark situations that the characters were involved in. The author should have just stuck to the dark feeling of the book. I understand why he tried to add comic relief, but it sucked. If you loved the Hunger Games, you MUST read this book. If you love gore, you MUST read this book. It was fantastic.

Tremenda obra maestra.

It was a very fast paced and fun read! The underlining messages are pretty relevant nowadays, and I enjoyed the variety out perspectives given throughout the book.

BABY WE WERE BORN TO RUN… never thought I would read “he knit his brows” so many times in my life but this was fucking glorious. all 40 characters are so real, all 40 deaths are impactful, there are so many small moments of scattered cinematic brilliance throughout the book, it FLIES by, it’s so fucking fun!!!! a piece of art that makes you think “I am so lucky to exist at the same time as this”

felt like i was literally reading an anime this was awesome. despite the large amount of students i didn’t feel overwhelmed trying to keep track who was who and where and what everyone was doing. extremely interesting social and historical commentary. can’t wait to watch the movie now.

It’s absolutely a genre defining book, paved the way for the hunger games and many more. That being said I found it lacklustre in some area. The concept is peak dystopian would not recommend if the current political climate is already stressing you out, with characters so indoctrinated into it they register the program as an inconvenience « oh too bad the school trip is gonna end up with all of us dead », very chilling way too real. But the characters don’t live up to the plot, I found them to be an archetype and not much else. The antagonists especially, whether it’s the mean girl with a traumatic past who becomes a « femme fatale » or the empty guy who turns into a cold blooded monster because he’s bored and even the executive who oversees it all who’s at his core an unhinged power drunk employee.
Overall 5/5 for concept and plot
But 2/5 for characters, I get that they’re middle schoolers but kawada and mimura have a personality so no excuse for the rest of them to be cardboard cutouts of people
