স্কুইড গেইম, হাঙ্গার গেইমস, অ্যালিস ইন বর্ডারল্যান্ড, এমন কি কোয়েন্টিন টারান্টিনোর মতো ডিরেক্টরও যেখান থেকে ইন্সপায়ার্ড সেটা হলো এই 'Battle Royale'।

একে কাল্ট ক্লাসিকও বলা যেতে পারে, কেন না উপরোক্ত শো/মুভি/বইগুলোর যে থিম তা সর্বপ্রথম 'Battle Royale' থেকে শুরু হলেও অরিজিনটা অনেকেরই অজানা এবং তুলনামূলকভাবে কম মানুষেরই পড়া হয়েছে। এমন কি মিডিয়াতে 'Battle Royale' নামে একটা সাব-জন্রাই তৈরি হয়েছে এই বই প্রকাশ হবার পর থেকে। যেটার সারমর্ম হলো মৃত্যুর খেলা। কালে কালে বহু সিনেমা-সিরিজ নির্মিত হয়েছে এখান থেকে ইন্সপিরেশন নিয়ে।

বইটার যদি একবাক্যে রিভিউ দিতে হয় তাহলে বলবো - 'এটা বইয়ের ফর্মে একটা পিউর হার্টব্রেক'।

Battle Royale স্টাইলের বই/শো-তে কখনো হ্যাপি মোমেন্টস আশা করতে নাই, সেই শিক্ষা স্কুইড গেইম দেখে সবারই আছে। যেখানে থিম হলো শেষে একজন বেঁচে থাকবে সেখানে ট্র‍্যাজেডি অবশ্যম্ভাবী। তবুও বইপোকাদের মতো ডিল্যুশনাল, ডে-ড্রিমার হয়তো আর নাই তাই এখানেও মনে মনে আশা থাকে।

ইন্সপায়ারড সবকিছুর চেয়ে অরিজিনাল স্বভাবতই raw হয়, কিন্তু তাই বলে এতোটা আশা করে পড়তে বসি নি। আমার ক্ষেত্রে যেটা প্রতিনিয়ত ঘটে - ট্র‍্যাজিক কিছু একটা আমি লাফ-ঝাঁপ দিয়ে পড়তে বসি, তারপর একদম ড্রেইনড হয়ে যাই। রিভিউ লিখতে বসে এখনো চোখে পানি চলে আসতেছে। ডিস্টোপিয়ান স্ল্যাশ হরর স্ল্যাশ ট্র‍্যাজেডি আমি আর জীবনেও পড়বো না (Shameless inner me knows I'll read again, but whatever...)

এই বইটা আমি জানুয়ারির প্রথম দিন থেকে পড়ছিলাম। অনেক চরিত্র বিধায় আমি পারসোনাল নোট বানিয়ে রেখেছিলাম বিয়াল্লিশটা চরিত্রেরই - নামসহ শর্ট ডেস্ক্রিপশন এবং পরবর্তীতে কে কাকে খুন করে বা কার হাতে খুন হয় সেটা। ট্র‍্যাক রাখার কারণে বেশ বড় বই আর প্রচুর ইনফরমেশন থাকলেও কখনো খেই হারিয়ে ফেলি নি।

একুশদিনে ৩০% এর মতো পড়া হলেও কাল রাত্রে কি মনে হতে ভাবলাম আমার আগেকার বইপাগলা দিনগুলোর মতো একবসায় শেষ করবো৷ সারারাত জেগে মাথার দপদপানি, একেকটা চ্যাপ্টারের ভায়োলেন্সে শক, সারপ্রাইজ, কিছু চরিত্রের সাথে অনেক বেশি কানেক্ট করে ফেলার পর তাদের হুটহাট কচুকাটা হওয়া, আর শেষ তিনটা অধ্যায়ে এসে রাগ-কষ্টে মাথার চুল ছেঁড়ার অবস্থা।

At the last three chapters I was like, 'So everything came down to this? THIS?

It was around 4 AM I think when I finished it - I was sitting speechless for a while, then as I kept thinking - big heaving sobs just came out of me. I didn’t expect to be so invested in this. Throughout the whole book I told myself - 'I know it can't have a happy ending, so I have no expectation.' But at the end I was like, 'Just let me cry in peace. F//k being logical'.

যে কয়টা বইতে আমি চোখের পানি খরচ করেছি, সবটাতেই আমার জন্য একটা স্পেসিফিক ব্রেকিং পয়েন্ট থাকে। একটা সীন, কিংবা অনেক সময় একটা লাইন। এটাতে সেই পয়েন্ট শুরু হয়েছিলো চ্যাপ্টার ৭৬ থেকে, আর ফাইনালাইজ করলো বইতে কয়েকবার মেনশনড হওয়া ব্রুস স্প্রিংস্টিনের লাইনগুলো - 'But till then tramps like us, baby we were born to run...'. Ah, this hurts my heart.

৪-৫ জন খুব প্রিয় চরিত্র ছিলো বইতে, এই ক'জন বাদেও মোটামুটি অনেক চরিত্রের সাথে আপনি সিম্প্যাথাইজ করতে পারবেন৷ আর সেটা করার কারণেই মৃত্যুগুলো বেশি আনঅ্যাকসেপ্টেবল আর শকিং লাগে।

ইংরেজি অনুবাদটা আমার আজ পর্যন্ত পড়া সবচেয়ে সাবলীল এবং সেরা ইংরেজি অনুবাদের একটা। একবারও মনে হয় নি এটা অন্য কোনো ভাষায় লেখা ছিলো।

যারা কিছুটা দুর্বল হৃদয়ের কিংবা ভায়োলেন্স নিতে পারেন না তাদের জন্য উপদেশ হলো এই বই স্কিপ করবেন, কারণ এতে প্রতিটা মার্ডারের অনেক বিস্তারিত বিবরণ দেয়া। চোখের সামনে উঠে আসে।

যারা Squid Game / Alice In Borderland / Hunger Games / Quentin Tarantino ফ্যান তাদের জন্য হাইলি, হাইলি রেকমেন্ডেড।

আমার কোনো বই খুব বেশি ভালো লাগলে আমি সেটার এডাপটেশন দেখি না। কারণ ভিভিড ইমাজিনেশনটা সীমার মধ্যে চলে আসে আর বইয়ের গভীর অনুভূতিটা নষ্ট হয়ে যায়। সেজন্য এটাও এভয়েড করবো।

কিন্তু এর গ্রাফিক নভেলটা অবশ্যই পড়বো। এই মুহূর্তে পড়ার মতো আত্মা আমার নাই, কিন্তু ফিউচারে অবশ্যই।

এখন আপাতত বইটা থেকে মুভ অন করতে একটা পিউর হরর পড়তে হবে। কিন্তু Shogo ক্যারেকটারটা থেকে কক্ষনো মুভ অন করতে পারবো না। আমাকে কেন এতো ডিপলি হিট করেছে এই ক্যারেকটারটা ঠিক এক্সপ্লেইন করতে পারবো না৷ But you love what you love.

IN SHORT: Scared children are put through a meat grinder.
I’d started reading a physical copy in Russian from my bookshelf and was scared away by a poor translation. The English copy isn’t a genius work either, but it relays information properly and is enjoyable (and as a result, readable). I can’t judge the original writing style properly because of it, yet it feels like the translator’s struggle in part comes from a lacking source. It’s most evident in dialogue – and at the same time, it takes skill to adapt the way Japanese kids speak to each other without it sounding awkward.
It’s a reread for me; however, the second half of the book evaporated from my memory because I’ve read it on a train. Starting with Shinji’s death, I read everything anew, only catching echoes of recognition at times.
The book’s charm isn’t in writing or even in the overall plot but in characters and conflict. I kept planning to read about 25 ebook pages at a time and surfaced after twice as much, shaken by the next death and yet lured by the first sentence of the next chapter.
I am not the best person to judge (Chuck Palahniuk, Poppy Bright, and Hiroya Oku raised me), but I found the gore… tasteful. If we didn’t come to know the character enough to form a connection to them and be affected by their death, then they served to flesh out the main cast. The initial shock of the first deaths moved to a reactionary detachment of the next few ones, then to dismay when students I came to know and like died. The entire scene in the lighthouse played out like a movie, even Kazuo’s death was both satisfying and sad.
The “we are all living under the cruel dictatorship” parts felt forced and lecture-like at times, especially grading in contrast with the way personalities were written. Yes, there is a digression in the middle of a scene telling us about the Republic of Greater East Asia, but the entire game with its characters does a sufficient job of showing, and those lectures felt excessive.
All in all, the book is a solid read, which I see myself picking up again.
