Wow, can't believe they made Fortnite into a book?!

A much more bloody, and dark version of The Hunger Games (which makes sense as HG massively ripped this off). It really delivers on the promise of lots of dead kids

This book does have flaws and lots of problematic elements - but I enjoyed it!

The writing is a bit strange sometimes but I think that might have been the translators flaw, so I think it would be better in the original Japanese.

It moves fast and keeps you gripped throughout. You get attached to the characters. The plot is good. Overall, an excellent book.

Now for the things that dropped it down from a 5 star for me. Firstly, this was clearly written by a man, probably for men too. The female characters are very over sexualised to say that they are a bunch of 15 year olds, and the way the female characters are written just doesn't ring true. But I do like that a lot of them are badass.

Linked to the point above, there are a lot of references to ra*e and SA. There aren't any graphic representations of that, but there is rather graphic language that I think was unnecessary. Despite this being based in a lawless environment, i do think even the men would just be concentrating on survival.

I'm not going to mention the gore as I think that is a given considering the subject of the novel. But you can definitely see Stephen Kings influence (as discussed in the interview at the end of the 2009 version.)

Overall, a really exciting read.

I read this to check if Hunger Games really did rip this off. I came away thinking, no, they are pretty different stories despite several coincidental alignments. For me this story delivers at the end, whereas Hunger Games was a more intriguing survivalist point of view at the beginning. Hunger Games also delivers more depth in terms of characters. Battle Royale is ambitiously broad in terms of characters and draws some interesting, if disturbing, energy from American rock lyrics along with splashy, stylized gore. It draws much inspiration from Orwell’s 1984, though Battle Royale has more fun with the ending.

But of course they're a part of you now.”

This book was an amazing thrill ride. The tension was so high and everything was so well done. But this isn't for the feint of heart, there's a lot of horrible and very graphic things going on. The author really made me care about a lot of the characters, instead of just making them cannon fodder. I also appreciate how diverse his cast is, and how they all have their own unique views and ways of looking at things. Definitely one of my new favorites!
