Love this book. Terrifying. Awful. Kiriyama is the best villain ever.

horrible

Be warned - you won't be able to put it down! Kudos to both the author and the translator for bringing this story to the masses.

Battle Royale constantly shifts perspectives, but you don't get lost at all. That's some serious literary voodoo. Oh, and the plot line is awesome. Sure, you may have already read/watched The Hunger Games which were published 9 years after this book, but I promise you there's a lot of new material here. It's brutal, graphic, and dark but also honest. How else would the Program go down?

And just you wait for the ending :)

Interesting cultural note: I initially found it very difficult to keep track of all the Japanese names. Since nearly every book I read is "English first," it's not an issue I encounter typically. Always good to be reminded of the biases we face every day - not every book character is going to be named Jill and Jack.

I read this after hearing about it in reviews of The Hunger Games (which I loved.) I had a hard time getting into this one, though. I just never got the point of why this story was written and what it said about humanity (it seemed like it was trying to say something.) There were some nicely-written parts, even in translation, and some interesting characters. But to me, it read overall like an excuse for a lot of blood and violence.

My Hunger Games kick has served me well, I'm glad I finally took the time to read this modern classic. I liked It so much more than I thought I would. Each character gets featured and is pretty developed despite how little time we spend with them. It was also a very fast-paced story. Sometimes, the dialogue was a bit stilted, but I can chalk that up to the translation. I also wasn't a fan of how often the kids discussed their crushes or how shocked our MC was about girls being capable of viciousness.

gave her a good 250 pages and whether it’s down to the book itself or my lack of focus, i still have no idea who anyone is, i’m skim reading, and such, just don’t really care to keep reading :(

I picked it up and then left it too long to read! 😫 My bad. Maybe I’ll come back to it, sorry 🥲
