This was one of the most engaging books I’ve ever read. It’s an addicting, gory, action-packed ride. The length of the book worried me (I don’t usually read 600-page books), but it never felt slow or boring, and I’m shocked at how consistent it was. I’m surprised I finished this in under a month.
The action was amazingly fun (and sometimes very gruesome). I never knew what was going to happen next. I loved how the characters interacted with each other, and I even grew attached to many of them. This book really takes its time to set everything up, and it’s so worth it. Loved it.

edit 21/2/25: i had to move it from 4.5 to 5 ⭐️. i genuinely cannot stop thinking about this book and particularly the 🗼 scene. just obsessed with how this touched on so many aspects of the human condition i just adore adore adore this.
17/2/25: incredible. such a brilliant book and loved reading the “originator” of the battle royale genre. something i loved in particular about this was the perspectives and actually getting to read about almost all 42 students in the game. this really made it easy to connect and understand the actions and motivations of certain characters and created such an intense story.
the lighthouse scene in particular was just fantastic. i wish i could read that scene for the first time again ugh just phenomenal. I think the only reason it’s not a 5 is probably to do with the motivations - i think id have liked a little more insight into the government and the aftermath but that’s just a personal preference and i still think the book stands really well on its own and is still a great ending!
