A novel I come back to again and again and again. Despite its 600+ pages, it's a surprisingly easy read that has you on the edge of your seat the entire time. It's action packed, full of benevolent slasher-horror (that doesn't border on gore-porn), whilst still maintaining a fantastic storyline with realistic character tropes. I first read this book at 16, and it has remained my favourite novel ever since - it was my awakening into the world of horror fiction. Takami's profound realism of characterisation (and a chapter for each character, despite being 42 of them), dog-eat-dog dystopia is refreshing and gripping, and is scarily realistic in terms of a what-if scenario of a chilling totalitarian government. This novel is an absolute must-read (especially for lovers of the 2000 film and the 15 volume manga series), especially to those who are big dystopian-horror fans!
Bonus: at the release of this book in 1999, it was banned in Japan for its controversy surrounding its graphic content and exposure to totalitarianism - finding out this information only made me want to read it more.

Couldn't help but be underwhelmed by this one. It's way too long, at 600+ pages, and not all that interestingly written. There's a lot of time spent simply describing logistics of characters moving from place to place on the island and way too many characters in general to keep track of, which limits potential for investment. The frequent descriptions of gory demises don't do anything for me and are kind of weird, tbh, as is the occasional mention of how, say, seductive looking a 15 year old's bare thigh is in the moonlight. And all the time spent in these teenagers' heads hearing who’s crushing on whom, just... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
I was curious to read this considering its cult classic status and the fact it was essentially The Hunger Games before The Hunger Games, and at a certain point I did finally get invested enough - particularly in the "main” trio - to power through. (Sunk cost and all that.) But for most of the experience I just found myself wishing I were reading The Hunger Games instead. Iirc, that series did a much better job of bringing many of the characters to life and making you care about everything that was going on. The games themselves also had more to them and were significantly more compelling than just giving everyone a bunch of random weapons and saying "ok, have at it".

O il pulp non fa per me o questo libro ha qualcosa che non va...
Cosa dire? Credo che gli unici punti positivi che mi sento di assegnare a questo libro (benché siano belli grossi) sono l'originalità della trama, alcuni spunti di riflessione interessanti e la scorrevolezza della narrazione, che tra un omicidio e l'altro raramente rallenta e si ferma per pensare.
Proprio il fatto che si fermi raramente a pensare potrebbe risultare uno dei punti a sfavore, per me, dell'opera.
Passiamo sopra ad alcune assurdità che accadono, ad alcune morti rocambolesche e spettacolarizzate, senza dubbio esagerate, ai fini del genere. Alcuni stereotipi tipici dei manga mi hanno più volte lasciata perplessa e mi hanno reso la lettura più pesante del dovuto.
Parlo del tipico protagonista di cui tutte si innamorano, del tipico genio dell'informatica, del cattivo che sembra buono che poi è cattivo( tranne che è buono), della tipica ragazza che ( poverina) per cercare di riscattarla come non completamente cattiva e controbilanciare tutte le crudeltà che l'autore le fa dire e fare, la trasforma nella martire per eccellenza, che ha subito stupri e violenze e maltrattamenti e stupri e... è solo la punta dell'iceberg! Un Iceberg esposto veramente frettolosamente, in un paio di paginette "supercondensate" di disgrazie che manco Fantozzi!
Parlo anche del fatto che tutto ciò viene mescolato in una sequela di eventi e coincidenze che a volte ho fatto fatica a credere. Forse per il fatto che mi aspettavo qualcosa di più aderente alla realtà, meno pulp e splatter, meno assurdo, ma più profondo.
Insomma, pensavo di fare un bel tuffo e invece mi sono ritrovata in una piscina gonfiabile di un metro scarso...
Ci sono alcuni avvenimenti, in particolare, che rasentano il "deus ex machina", perché non si riesce a capirne la motivazione, altrimenti.
In definitiva trovo che il romanzo parta tutto sommato in modo curato e realistico, ma andando avanti le cose sfuggano di mano all'autore e diventino fin troppo assurde e frettolose.
La pecca più grande, sicuramente, sono i personaggi, rigidamente inquadrati sui binari tipici del manga per ragazzi. Più volte mi sembrava di rivedere ragazzi e ragazze conosciuti all'interno di altri shonen o shojo, ricalcati perfettamente dai personaggi di questo libro.
Alcune scelte tipiche dei manga, come la spettacolarizzazione e esagerazione dell'azione e dei combattimenti, che già trovo fastidiose all'interno del fumetto giapponese, penso stonino un po' se lette in un romanzo.
PS: ci sono anche, forse a causa di cali di attenzione, incongruenze nella trama, come il fatto che il protagonista sogni alcune delle morti dei suoi compagni, identiche a quelle avvenute nella realtà, che non ha mai visto e che sono avvenute dopo che si è addormentato, oppure. Insomma... sono titubante e sicuramente ci sono molti elementi che rendono il libro oggettivamente imperfetto. Purtroppo io credo che siano i dettagli a fare di un libro un'opera d'arte e questa storia cade in fallo su molti dettagli.

il fatto che Shogo, con un foro nella schiena sia in perfetta forma, non si lamenti dal dolore e riesca a disarmare il supervisore del programma che, per sua stessa ammissione " non è uno qualunque"

Absolutely one of my favorite books of all time! I decided to read it again after reading it 20 years ago and it did not dissapoint. The characters are great and the story just keeps going and doesn't give way. With so many characters, you learn about them.

The pre-cursor to all the teenage murder books currently abundant, Battle Royale was making teens kill each other in an enclosed arena long before Katniss picked up a bow and arrow.
This book is insane. It can be comical at times, because the scenario is so outrageous. A bus full of teens, thinking they are on their way to a field trip, are knocked out and wake up in a classroom. They are on an island that has been completely cleared of all the people who live there. They are each given a duffel bag containing a weapon, ranging from a high powered fire arms to a fork. They are told the last person alive wins.
I spent a month after reading this book scoping out public places that I would hide in.
My only caveat about this book is the fact that it's translated from Japanese, so the characters names are all Japanese. With an entire classroom of teenagers to keep track of, it can be hard for a Westerner to keep track of the short, similar, and unfamiliar names in this book. I frequently wished for a glossary of characters just to make sure I knew who was who. Don't fear, once people start dying it gets easier to keep track.
A totally fun read, but much more gory than The Hunger Games. I'm way too scared to watch the movie based on this book, I know watching the gore would be way more than I can handle.
