This falls under the "Great concept, poor execution" and " I saw that ending from miles away" categories.
The man of steel has a face off against "Doomsday", and wins pretty easily. The only problem is: He is turning into Doomsday! And Doomsday is hell bent on destroying... pretty much anything he comes across! DA-DA-Da-Da-DUNNNNNNNNNNNNN!

Mehhh.
While I appreciate the idea, I think Charles Saoule messed up in exploiting it to make the story more original and way more epic. I understand that there only are so many villains in the DC universe, but please...

I like a lot about this story. The idea of what'd happen if Superman lost his shit has been played with, but this is his power doubled, him struggling for control, and all of Earth at stake. There are great character moments from Clark, Diana, Lois, Lana, Kara, etc. The whole thing is brought down to 4 stars by some really ridiculous plot points, and then to 3 by being twice as long as it needs to be. I'm glad I read it, but I don't plan on doing so more than once.

Not, bad. Action packed, with a who's who of the DC universe. Art was the DC house style. Story started tired, then twisted into something better, then contrived itself into a better bow.

I mean, it's hard to love a story about a virus that's defeated by willpower. That's...that's not a thing. You can't get rid of rabies with the power of believing in yourself, you know?

But I don't want to talk about that, I want to talk about seeing Poison in concert and how it relates to DC Comics.

A few years back I went and saw Poison in concert. This was at the Stampede, a local rodeo-based event that brings music acts every year. Usually they bring a medium-sized country act, maybe a pop act, and something that fits into a classic-rock-ish category.

When I saw Poison, Bret Michaels introduced some guy, I think his bodyguard(?), who came out on the stage to thunderous applause.

The way he was introduced, and the way the crowd reacted, I understood that this fella was a known entity to most of the people there, and I guessed it was something to do with Rock of Love, which was on the air at the time, as opposed to the music of Poison.

So, I knew THAT this person was significant, but not why, and I personally felt no affection or excitement for some guy who was on a TV show I'd never seen.

I want to try and read some more DC this year because reading DC comics feels like this to me: I can usually tell that something I'm seeing is meant to be important, to be a big reveal, or to be a cute joke at the expense of DC's long and twisty history, but other than knowing THAT something is meaningful, I can't really figure out why.

I've read enough Marvel that I can kind of jump in on a big event book and generally follow it. I know the characters and the rules of that universe well enough to follow. But with DC, I'm usually kind of lost.

Which is why I want to try and do a little more DC this year, see if I can't get to the place where I can pick up a DC book and have a little more understanding of what the fuck's going on.

It was fine. Lack of explanation and justification for major plot points brought my rating down, but all in all a decent story.

Great artwork, interesting storyline, but a tad crippled.

A lot happens, and not all of it is handled gracefully. I wonder if I should chalk this another tally in the Superman-is-evil-and-we're-all-hesitant-to-stop-him column...
But I will say the art is pretty, and I was really buying the Wonder Woman x Superman relationship for a bit there.

Well, at least it gives a new twist to the Doomsday / Clark rivalry.

The story, much like Superman, succumbs to its baser impulses and becomes a bulky, jagged thing, interesting for its transformation but eventually you just want to put the thing down.

1.5 rounded down because this became a chore to finish.
Me trying to figure out the single issue order:

I found a couple of different guides and they sometimes contradicted each other, but I needed this because I'm going to continue reading all of the series's issues after this event.

I would go in-depth about the things I hated about this but honestly this is old and I'm probably the only one that would care about my dissection of it.

Main reasons I wasn't a fan (these don't apply to every issue):
❌Terrible art
❌Inconsistent character designs (ex: a person's hair changing length mid-issue)
❌Stupid decisions that didn't make sense
❌People being assholes out of character (ex: Lois threatening to expose Superman's identity)
❌Laws of physics being broken (ex: flying around space unprotected like it's nbd)

I'm sure there are others but those are some of the ones I can remember. What really sucks is I do think this is an important event to at least know a bit about to continue on with New 52 and Convergence. My advice? Look up a summary instead and skip this book.
