3.5 stars. I liked it but thought I’d like it more. Something about it didn’t quite work for me but there were lots of parts I loved and moved me.

I’m a mood reader, so part of the reason I didn’t finish this book is because I just wasn’t vibing with it. But I also had a hard time empathizing and liking some of the main characters in this book, which made it tough to want to continue to listen to. I might try to pick this up again in the future, but just not right now.

I can see why this has become an instant, contemporary classic in popular fiction. The storytelling of childhood friendship is charming and compelling, and I found many points of resonance. The flow into womanhood was also tender and yet tough, like the bridge from childhood to adolescence can be. However, it didn't feel either like an easy, enjoyable read nor a challenging, thought provoking book - it fell in the middle and that meant it occasionally fell flat. However, I did enjoy it overall. I would recommend it to some readers, such as those with a love of more modernist novels or want to explore the general public's idea of a 'classic'.
