So a more twisted, darker and more beautifully composed ‘Ruby Sparks’? It’s a 5 for the art, but a 3 for the dialogues/text; and an uncertain 4 for the plot. I read this very quickly. Surprised, but not shocked by some of the sexually comic scenes. The art is stunning. The narrative is confusing – in a surreal, magic realism sort of way – but not unpleasant at all. I found it disturbing that Nakamura (probably) based the main women-character(s) on herself. Like if you Google-ed ‘Asumiko Nakamura’, a woman with the same haircut instantly pops up? Hmmm. I don’t know how I feel about that.

Book that takes itself too seriously but in reality is extremely cliche and tacky. This had a lot of potential but so many elements ruined it.

Idk if it's a problem with the translation, but the timeline jumps around so much it's hard to stay focused and really understand the weight of each revelation.

I'd like to start out by saying the art in this manga is absolutely beautiful- the style is extremely unique and captivating.

Overall, the story is good. The mystery of the novel kept me drawn in, the characters are also interesting, but due to the frequently changes in timeline even within the same chapters, it can be hard to follow. You have to give this book your undivided attention to fully take it in.

I personally loved reading Utsubora, and personally recommend giving it a reread to fully take it in.
