Yaaaay I’ve finally read SVSSS! Well, I still have an entire book’s worth of extras, but I’m glad to finally have read the main story. It was pretty good—not as good as I think others have found it, but I did enjoy it. I also cried

when Qi-ge’s identity was revealed

, so that’s usually a mark that I enjoyed something. This definitely felt like a first novel, and I think MXTX has really perfected her storytelling with her later series, but this was still a fun read.

this is my second time dnfing this volume. last time, i only got 10% in, now i got 39% in and then i skipped forward to see how it would end because i knew i wouldn’t read the entire thing, and i had the misfortune of reading the cave scene… (whyyy? i mean, i honestly wouldn’t have minded if it was like halfway through the book, and then we got more relationship progression and communication but in the last chapter??)

oof, this is honestly a shame because i genuinely enjoyed the other two volumes so much. i understand what mxtx is trying to do, and i get that this is supposed to be wacky and satirical, but it’s just not working for me personally and i can’t get behind the romance - don’t get me wrong, i love extreme slowburn and i don’t mind questionable age gaps, but i was really hoping to see more progression on shen qingqiu’s part beyond “no homo” (it is clear that he cares a lot about luo binghe from his actions and i just wish his internal monologue also reflected that).

i think i just have to accept that svsss isn’t for me (which is a shame because i saw so much potential in it) and hope i have better luck with mxtx’s other works.

Ok final thoughts! (I mean I guess it won’t be because there’s the fourth one but my understanding is that it’s all the extras so). I loved all the characters - they’re so much fun! And it’s a fun take on rewriting genre! I don’t like the main pairing in this one as much as in MDZS or TGCF - I just don’t find it as compelling and of course there’s *that* scene which I’m mostly choosing to ignore like the incense burner extra in MDZS. But the concept is interesting and all the characters are enjoyable (separately lol). You can tell it’s MXTX’s first work when comparing the relationship and writing to the other two, but it’s still enjoyable.
