One of the weakest of this series. I just felt bad for Fenella most of the time. She’s just thrown around by the men in her life with little regard for her personhood.
More of a 3.5, there's something cozy about this alternate medieval world that suits me when I'm in the mood for this kind of thing.

Oh. My. Gawd. This book was so mind numbingly boring. This was a more than 17 hour audiobook with over 20 side characters, and so much palace intrigue and maneuvering yet still I don’t even think it had a plot. I didn’t feel anything for Fenella and Oswald and didn’t get how they even felt anything for each other. This could have been good. The jilted betrothal and him being grievously injured in battle and forgetting about their time together then remembering as they got to know each other again but that was not explored at all and was only revealed at the end in a brief confession from him. This was just a story about a woman trying to figure out court after living in the country and a man who had been celibate for ten years who finally got a wife to bed. Everything else was just world building and set up for the next series of books. I listened to the audiobook at double speed at times just to make it through but I don’t know why I did. I should have abandoned this book and not wasted my time. This one was a fail.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this one! It was a long book, but Coldbreath’s writing was very nicely paced and I never felt bored reading it even if it took me a while to finish. I actually found myself wishing it was longer at times, if only to give her more time to get into the court intrigue, friendships, and daily details of palace life. But it’s a romance so of course that needs to be the focus. I really enjoyed all the side characters, though; everyone had their place and little story without anyone seeming like a caricature (except perhaps the king). I do wish the main “conflict” at the end hadn’t ended up being a silly misunderstanding, since miscommunication is such a lazy trope, but I liked the book on the whole anyway. It was ridiculous how many revelations were packed into the very end of the book, but I love that everything wasn’t tied up in a nice bow at the end—some of the loose ends do have me curious! I’ll definitely be checking out more from her.
