Loved this book waaaay more than the first! Loved how the characters were more fleshed out. This book made me laugh, made me tear up, and malso made me feel so frustrated at times hahahaha (especially with how dense the MMC was), but hey, it looks like that runs in the Vawdrey family 😅 i also remembered making a note early on the story that i couldnt imagine liking the youngest brother enough to read his book (the 3rd book in the series) but the author was able to make me like him enough at the end to consider reading his story!

When Fenella gets word that her husband is planning to divorce her, she goes to ask Oswald (the King’s top advisor, and also the man who jilted her when she was 15) intercede on her behalf… turns out it’s super convenient for Oswald that she’s brought along their old betrothal papers as blackmail. 

Oswald is supposed to be the smartest of all the Vawdrey brothers, but even he is not immune to the whole “oh she’s a plain thing, I’ll just stash her away in the countryside……. huh, she’s gorgeous and I can’t stop thinking of her and what is this weird feeling in my chest?” Cue possessive/jealous acts. Love that. Led to some very steamy scenes. 

Fen’s character is less defined (beyond being sweet and kind of naive). I found her likeable if not particularly memorable. 

The third act didn’t really hit the spot for me (I would have preferred more angst, or maybe to skip the third act conflict completely because the audiobook felt a little long), but overall I highly enjoyed this book but that’s no surprise - I don’t think I’ve read an Alice Coldbreath book I didn’t like.
