I read this book because I'm always looking for something to read with my 11-year-old son.  This one would be too intense for him, but I read it through and really enjoyed it.  A story about a family fleeing North Korea in 1950, it is intense and terrifying but also hopeful; heartbreaking and at the same time asking important questions about the price of survival and how to go on when humanity has lost all sense of reason.

This is the story I was looking for when I read The druid and the dragon.  It is completely different, of course, being historical fiction instead of fantasy, but it is a story about a girl without a notion of how to be strong in the world, who discovers her own strength and who becomes who she is really meant to be.
