2024 Re-read
Despite the lower stakes, it's delightful to see the children of Fairy Oak frolicking about. The small interactions between Feli and the fairies from her homeland add a refreshing touch, breaking up the more serious tone and heavy atmosphere of the first trilogy's plot risks.
As a girlie that ✨loves love✨, I must declare with great enthusiasm that this book impeccably establishes one thing:MY OTP IS CANON! DUFF AND TOMELILLA ARE A THING, OR WERE, BUT WHATEVER oh what a joy 🥰
On a more serious note, the book provides an excellent introduction to love, especially for the targeted younger audience. It portrays it as a natural thing that must be embraced. Overall, the book depicts everyday life with a tender touch, never becoming boring because of the intriguing Captain mystery balancing the plot. As both a sequel and a side novel, I think it achieves a perfect mix. Additionally, it allows other secondary characters among the children to shine, further enhancing the reader's sense of welcome and inclusion in the village.
While this book was enjoyable, it wasn't perfect. The plot seemed patched together and lacked smooth transitions. The author appeared to have some ideas but didn't build up to them effectively. The storyline involving the Captain, in particular, felt messy. However, I assume this disjointedness might have been intended to create suspense 😅
And most worrying of all, one of my main issues remains: you still have to overlook the age gaps between characters, but I know that issue is still there… (yes, I’m talking about you Vanilla and Jim 🤨)
