Erikson keeps weaving a more complex tale that I've just come to love. The cast of characters is wonderful and despite the book's hard/open endings, I'm here ready to queue up for the next read! The magic is powerful, but none of it feels out of place and Erikson's penchant for consequences continues to satisfy each plot pivot.

Almost perfect. Too slow of a start to be perfect.

What a ride. My favorite of the series so far.

Way more accessible and with a ton more forward action than Gardens of the Moon, but loses a lot of the 'gods playing with the lives of mortals' stuff that made the first book so resonant. Still, a couple years on I can remember way more characters, imagery, and plot from this one than from Gardens of the Moon so that counts for a lot. Extremely gripping read!

This book has a much more contained story and does a better job and holds the reader's hand in the world-building bits quite a bit more than its predecessor, making it an overall better book.

There were still parts of the story - especially in the middle - when the story becomes a little bit boring, especially Duiker's, which I found to be the least interesting plot, and character, by far.
