Very interesting look into Russia and how Putin runs his country.
the story itself was very interesting and I learned a lot but the author’s voice/personality was… not my fav
I really enjoyed reading this book. At first I thought it was just another story, but then the more I read this book the more I realize it wasn't just a story, but one man's story against Russia. It's just unbelievable and amazing what the Russians did. One can only imagine the different things they have done and are not documented. A really good read and many life lessons from this book.
informative
medium-paced
I wish this was a fictional work. It is an amazing story. I hate that it is real. This book is well written. The first part is a bit boring but makes sense to set the scene of what was to come and give us readers a perspective into a lifestyle that in this book goes from high pressure to unthinkable. I can not imagine how heavy a weight it is to be Bill Browder. But I am glad he is able to bear it and inspire people to be better.
fast-paced
Fast read that highlights the danger and reach and pathetic (but deadly) pettiness of Putin. It also details the rampant corruption of post-Soviet Russia.
There were aspects of this book that I loved and it brought me to tears. The last third of the book was especially well written and amazing. The author explains financial concepts in a way that’s easy to understand. The aspect that I didn’t enjoy as much was the narrative of “I’m here to save Russia from itself” - this was especially prevalent in the middle third of the book. However, that aside, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in human rights campaigns or Russia as a country.
Read this book after several suggestions on Twitter. I love business non fictions and this books is like a novel with several twists, but it is not a fiction.
Although some paste of the book did not do well, it was very interesting to see how he decided to go for one thing and kept chasing the opportunity and built such a business.
Rest of the book takes a sad turn of events when it is not just a business anymore and involved lives too. Interesting to see how something that looks like 'just a business' could have several consequences.
