The best non fiction book I have ever read. I smiled, I cried and I was completely shocked by the story. What a read with everything that is going on in the world at the moment

I found this recommended read on Shane Parrish’s, (host of The Knowledge Podcast) and author of the Farnham Street blog article Reading Better. Bill Browder’s Red Notice appeared in his recommended 2018 reading list. His three tips about this book really grabbed my attention

‘Whoever ghost wrote this with Browder is a genius. Not only is the story crazy but the writing is exceptional…
It was hard to actually put this book down.
If you like politics, financial crime, thrillers and conspiracies …. Read it.’

And he is 100% right.

With Russia in the news recently with the proof of their interference in the US election it is indeed topical to discover more about how the government and business works in Russia. What you learn in this book is the depth of corruption and the scale of criminal activity, especially in the financial world, in Russia. Russia after communism was meant to give power back to the people with democracy and a rule of law that applies to all Russians equally. Well the bear that is Russia is corrupt, evil in a way that is somehow worse than Stalin in that the atrocities are hidden from the world, and the resultant human rights abuses are discounted by other countries in the interests of trade.

Red Notice is a thriller, all the more confronting because all of it is true. In November 2009 a young tax lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was brutally beaten to death by police officers. His crime? Blowing the whistle on an enormous tax fraud, $230 million stolen by the Russian Interior Ministry officials. This book exposes this human rights crime, how it came about and Browder’s three year struggle to have Russia brought to account in some way for this crime.

Bill Browder has created numerous YouTube videos to expose Putin and Russia and the facts in this case, let alone all the other Human Rights abuses that occur in Russia and he will not be silenced about the murder of his tax lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, and is still actively campaigning for sanctions against Russians who are guilty of human rights, including banning visas for travel in the US and freezing financial assets.

If you are a true crime buff do not be put off by the business aspect of this book as this outlines how white collar crime is deadly in Russia and how the Russian Government and Putin ensure criminal Russian mafia steal money and assets that belong to the Russian people.

I rarely read non-fiction, but if I do, it has to be for something as interesting as this. Bill breaks down financial talk for the non-knower to comprehend and it has the regular thrill I require in a good book. I learned a lot about Russia relations and how not every "democratic" process is the same!

A fascinating true story that illustrates the evils of corruption and the massive amounts at stake. A bit self-congratulatory in places.

I really enjoyed reading Red Notice— I was constantly appalled by the actions of the Russian government and their constant abuse. A great perspective of the inner works of Russia, their justice system (or lack thereof), and the humanitarian crisis at hand.

Great book. A must-read for any fans of finance or those wanting to learn more about human-rights atrocities of the Russian government. I was blown away.
