Sometimes I liked it and sometimes it was insufferable.

I really enjoyed Joan Didion's style of writing.
Some of the collected essays were more appealing to me than others, like the sections about shopping malls and Malibu.

i cannot rate this book, but i do hope to revisit it later in life. her writing is truly awe inducing, however i am not afraid to admit that it may have gone over my head quite often, especially given many references i don’t understand.

My first work by Joan Didion. I'd be open to reading some of her later stuff but this didn't do it for me. It seemed like she was projecting her apathy onto the whole world (except for dams) and I felt like there wasn't enough informative/educational value to make up for the cynical and repetitive writing? Also of ALL the critiques of second wave feminism to give, she thought women just had unrealistic romantic expectations??

white privileged woman slowly gains class consciousness

Idk, did not feel cohesive. Felt random and fragmented at times. Got really old quick her talking about how vapid the society she lived in was and then she proceeded to talk more about her lavish lifestyle in depth. Felt about as out of touch as her describing how out of touch people were in this society.

The first part was much more intriguing than the rest. I found myself scanning the last section of the book because I grew bored.

I adore Didion's writing style however I feel there is quite a lot I'm missing with this book as I am not familiar with the cultural/sociopolitical landscape of 60's California.
