Another day, Another Didion. THE book for a western girl, a love letter in full gore.

Snappy and enjoyable. Didion has a great sense for how long an essay should go on, and her choice of topics is made all the more interesting by her own willingness to simply go out and see something for herself seemingly on a whim. Occasionally a bit blithe in evaluating or dismissing, and certainly a bit out of touch with people of a certain station or location, but willing to be very matter-of-fact about things others are treating abstractly, and the ways she makes her statements are written well and satisfying to read.

there were moments where she lost me but found me again. the fact that this can be read as a sort of modern book just proves how society is living in a circle. her writing is just too special

“Everything was unmentionable but nothing was unimaginable.”

This is one of so many amazing quotes from this books! This collection of essays was so captivating and I feel like I learned so much about Joan Didion and what was going on in the world when she wrote the stories. She interviewed so many interesting people of her time and so many stories include great details that I believe most people wouldn’t remember. I feel so intelligent after reading this book and I am interested in reading some of the other books she has published!

DID NOT FINISH: 22%

too niche California, I just didn’t care.

She's clearly a very talented writer with extremely fascinating life experience but I also don't know if I agree with any of her conclusions/inferrals here lol. maybe I'm stupid idk!

Enjoyed most: James Pike, American; Holy Water; The Getty; On the Morning After The Sixties.

Joan Didion has this way of writing that is completely unfathomable... I can't describe it. Small things are big and big things are small and everything is very cool all the time. So glad I finally went back to read the rest of these essays after only reading a few in college.

Listening to an essay collection is difficult, so I already know I want a hard copy to revisit. I love the range of subjects in this one- from the Manson murders, to the The Doors, feminism, shopping centers, anxiety and migraines, to the pollination of orchids. Didion’s attention to time and place inspires me to see the moment we’re in for what it is.
