Slouching Towards Bethlehem is a really good book. The White Album is better. I'm not sure why. Maybe watching the autopsy of a failed utopia is more interesting than watching the realtime reportage.

this is proof that style can matter way more than substance bc joan didion can literally write about traffic control, migraines, or lifeguards and make them enthralling
