"G" is for Gumshoe

Sue Grafton

3.75 AVERAGE

Best one in the series yet for me
funny lighthearted mysterious medium-paced

I think it was the Salton Sea. Anyway this one grabbed and entertained more than most. This may be where I started listening to the audiobooks. Judy Kaye does a terrific job! Great voice for Kinsey.

Another thoroughly entertaining story following Kinsey Millhone, I can't get enough of this character. Sue Grafton's writing is quick witted and keeps me turning the page with ease.

I didn't like this book as much as I liked some of the other Kinsey Milhone series. The romance between the Kinsey and Dietz, the two varying plot lines, and Kinesey's reactions to many things just seemed stretched and out of character.

I do LOVE that I finished this book in two days because it is so fast and I'm hoping that H is better than G.

Short Review: Poor Kinsey, everyone wants to kill you but in this book, i think you kinda of deserve it. You come question some poor girl who is already in a bad state, and you basically trigger this horrible panic attack in here, and you think it's a freaking good idea to come back a few hours later and steal from her?! WTF. Then the ending was a bit weird,
Spoilerthe whole kidnapping thing made the story wrap up too nicely for me.

One of my favorites so far.

These do continue a general trend of improvement, but I really only read them because they're quick. Kinsey is getting a little stronger as a hero as the books go on, though, so that's a plus.

They aren't really deep, but this one is a satisfying read.

This is the first book I've read in the alphabet series and it is so well written you don't need to have read any of the others.
PI Kinsey Millhone is asked by Irene Gersh to look into the whereabouts of her missing mother, Agnes whilst simultaneously trying to avoid the attentions of a hit man hired to kill her for a ridiculously small amount of money.
Effectively two separate stories, Grafton moves between them with ease and just when the main protagonists think they have overcome one obstacle, a larger one is thrown in their path.
Like all good writers Grafton brings what seems like small insignificant details into the plot which are important later on in the book. The characters are well developed and it's interesting to see the relationship between Millhone and Diez, a PI Millhone engages to help prevent any attempt on her life. A change from the usual, 'I can do this on my own attitude' a fictional detective tends to have.
I felt towards the end of the cases the book felt a bit rushed as convenient facts fell into Millhone's lap but on the more positive side this book is a gripping page turner.

Ok I've read about 10 books in the Alphabet series, and this one has been my favorite. Such an interesting mystery and it felt different than the others. However, I'm starting to pick up on some strange Sue Grafton phrases...like "mouth noises". At least once in every book (so far) someone makes these "mouth noises", and I'm jarred every time by that weird phrase. Anyone else? Whatever, I'll keep reading to the end!
