This started really well, with a road trip to an interesting destination - the Slabs, near Salton Sea in California. The end, however, was a shocker, and not in a good way. I've said in reviews for previous books in this series that one of the reasons I like Kinsey is that she's practical, with a commonsense approach to her own safety - but here, her absolutely moronic decision-making almost gets her killed, and honestly: she would have deserved it. If you find a body in someone's back shed, with suspicions that there are more, you call the police instead of poking around for half an hour and putting yourself in a position where you're about to confront a killer and no one knows where you are. Admittedly, the killer's an ancient old man and can easily be defended against, but then there's the hitman after her and she blows that off too.
My only consolation is that she had a head injury early in the book, and this explains her subsequent behaviour. I'd say nice things about the violently practical Rochelle, except her inability to be that violently practical earlier on gets her brother killed, so you know what, this one's a dead loss. Use your brain, Kinsey. You're supposed to have one.

This was the weakest of the Grafton alphabet series that I have read yet. I am reading them alphabetically. I actually listened to the book-on-cd, which isn't my favorite way to "read" a book, and perhaps that's why I didn't like it as much. There were two big stories happening in this book, as well as the story of the romance, and it just seemed like too much going on. I will continue to read through the alphabet, though, as I'm hoping this one was just a fluke.

In the 7th book of the Kinsey Millhone series, Kinsey is searching for a missing woman while also dealing with a hit that has been put out on Kinsey herself.
I adore this series so much. It's at the point where every time I write up my thoughts on one, I'm reminded of just how much I love the series so I go instantly put the next book on hold at the library. It's a comfort series at this point. This book in particular had much more tension because Kinsey was dealing with a hit on her own life. The actual other mystery that she was investigating was a bit more confusing with the ending but I just didn't care. I read these books because I love Kinsey as a main character and enjoy seeing what troubles she will get into next. They are fun to read and lose myself in for a day or two. I'm excited to continue on and will probably be picking up book eight very soon. I recommend reading this series in order if possible but honestly you could probably jump in anywhere and be okay. Kinsey is just a delight.
Mystery readers and even cozy mystery readers (I find this series to be both comforting and a bit cozy) should give this series a try. Four stars for this book in particular but it's a five star series overall for me so far.

Another good solid Kinsey Milhone story, although possibly one of the weaker ones thus far. And possibly one you're better off reading in order, rather than a stand alone, as it's as much a continuation of her life story rather than a stand alone cunning mystery to get your teeth into.
There are two things going on in this book. Kinsey gets a call from a lawyer (I think he was) to let her know some small time thug she helped investigate and put away years ago, has put a contract out on her life. Being in prison didn't suit him, and he blamed the lawyers, the judge and the investigator (but of course not himself!), so he puts out a contract on four people's lives with a price of 5000 USD for all four. I know this book is 20 years old, but that seems cheap, even Kinsey thinks so. And considering the carry on that ensues in the book, it goes to prove that you get what you pay for. If a professional hit man had been on the job, she would have died very early on in the book. And thank god she didn't! So we have that, and the blossoming interaction with another P.I. she hired a few books ago to do a little local research for her. They never met, but the lawyer suggested she hire him again for security.
Then there's the job she's hired for in this book. She's hired by this neurotic, hypochondriac, clingy woman Irene, who hasn't heard from her mother in six months. She hasn't bothered to go out to the slab city city in the desert where her mother is living, or worried too much, but now she's hiring a detective to go find out what's happened. This isn't a massive job, as she basically goes out there, finds the old lady and it turns out she needs to go into an old folks' home. So she gets moved back to Santa Teresa. One night whilst Kinsey is sitting with the old lady in the hospital, she babbles a lot of randomness about people from her younger days. And yes, it's all a bit of a mystery and Kinsey will solve it. But honestly, this just occurs right at the end of the book like a jolly thing to figure out on an afternoon. Which is why I don't feel this one makes as good as a stand alone book. You've got to be into the on going Kinsey story to feel the tension of this threat on her life looming over her.

Another great Kinsey Millhone novel... this time Kinsey is hired to find an elderly woman, while being pursued by a hit man. Little does she know how much danger she is in, or what kind of mystery the old woman has. A thriller to the very end!
