Nick Offerman called George Saunders the Buddha and I kind of agree

If you love short stories, please don't let this collection escape your attention. The stories are inventive and riveting. I doled them out to myself like the most coveted pieces of chocolate in the box.

i randomly saw an ad for the new netflix movie with Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller called "Spiderhead", based off on this short story and decided I wanted to check it out.

Really interesting concept. It was just a short story so there's not much depth or background to it but I enjoyed the world he created and the crumbs he left. I don't think I'll watch the movie but I recommend the story -- it's a quick read you can finish in a couple of minutes.

The SGD story is definitely the star of this collection- a dystopian world where a young girl questioning a bizarre, thoughtlessly cruel trend is seen as idealistic, naive. At turns funny, horrifying, thought-provoking... this collection of stories is my first experience of Saunders, and my interest is definitely peaked.

Escape from spiderhead was my favorite but took a while to get the cadence. Puppy was really sad. Home- returned soldier, dark humor.
The Semplica Girl Diaries was the longest, tough read with the cadence and lack of sentence structure.
Themes: abuse, poverty, absent parents, class awareness/ striving, divorce, catholic school, protagonists with internal dialogues/ imagined conversations with other characters. Story arcs related to morality struggles.
