I’m so upset. The ending. It’s so fatalistic and rushed. One of the worst endings I’ve ever read

Roanhorse mostly sticks the landing in this conclusion to her "Between Earth and Sky" trilogy. The story takes the plot threads that were introduced in the first three books and ties them up to their final conclusion.

First, Xiala returns to her island home and leads an uprising against occupying soldiers. Second, Serapio has to complete several tasks from the Coyote god in order to fulfill a prophecy and avert the upcoming destruction of his city. Third, Naranpa has to rediscover the lost art of dreamwalking and use this to assist in the upcoming war.

The first two plot threads were engaging and lead to satisfying conclusions for the characters, which is no easy task given the thousands of miles that separated them for the previous few hundred pages. Naranpa's arc was somewhat weaker, and Okoa was sidelined for the majority of the story. This led to some issues in which her important plot points were relegated to a much smaller page count than the other major characters.

Despite this, the conclusion was very fun and I think Roanhorse did a great job with the series overall.

A crap ton of political drama, a  small amount of romance, and an even smaller amount of action. Don’t get me wrong. The world in this series is intricate and intriguing, but there was too much talk and build up and not enough climax over the entire series. I was waiting for a war to happen and cause a bonfire of chaos but in the end, there was only a fizzle. Also, some of the side characters became caricatures of their world instead of developing into something more. Here’s looking at you Okoa Carrion Crow. You deserved better. (I understand the reason for what happened and the theme in played into, but still…my poor dude was used and abused.) Serapio and Xiala’s love story is still the main reason to read this series…actually, it may take a back seat to Xiala herself.
