“I am, as you said, a child still learning to swim. But I will do what I must, even if it means I drown.”

This is the final book in a trilogy so I’ll keep this review short and, of course, spoiler free.

Rebecca Roanhorse has really written a wonderful fantasy series inspired by pre-Columbian American cultures. This series has a lot of POVs on different sides of a conflict and I’ve really enjoyed seeing it all play out, and wondering how Roanhorse was going to tie it all together.

Xiala is my fave and I loved that she was one of the most prominent characters in Mirrored Heavens. Iktan is another favourite of mine and I was happy to see xe had POV chapters in this book. The characters have always drawn me in, and they continued to change my mind and make me root for them throughout this entire final book.

Although I enjoyed this finale a lot and think it ended up in a good place, it was probably also the slowest of the series for me. It’s still fucking good though, so go read this whole trilogy if you like:

✨Queernormative worlds
✨Magic
✨Warring gods
✨Betrayal
✨Great characters with cool magic

World building was great in this series. I didn’t really feel like any of the characters had a satisfying ending. A few plot points/magic solutions that came out of nowhere and weren’t well explained.

I feel like this series would've been better presented as a duology. The 2nd and 3rd book just felt like the same part of the story extended. It was just extremely lengthy set up for not much at all. The most climactic part of this entire series is the ending of the first book. The 2nd book is just set-up for the 3rd, and the 3rd spends most of it's time setting up for not much of anything really. Almost feels like the 2nd and 3rd book could've cut out a lot of the set-up for more plot.
