My first time reading fantasy romance as an adult (and my first time writing a review) and I loved it! Took a while to get into, but once I was invested I couldn’t put it down and was always thinking about it and looking forward to reading more.
It was full of twists and turns and I really felt like I was there with Violet when she was discovering everything and feeling every emotion with her.
However, I struggled with the amount of lore/worldbuilding and characters- the content of it was great but there was a lot to keep up with and it could’ve been easier to understand if it were spaced out rather than having a lot in a short space of time, especially at the start as this put me off reading it initially. (But this could be just because I’m new to fantasy so not used to this level of grasping the world around the character before getting into the storyline? Would love to hear someone else’s thoughts!)
Reading Xaden’s POV in the bonus chapters let us see his perspective on Dain, as although he did some questionable things I couldn’t see him as having anything other than good intentions under it all until near the end where Xaden talks about things like his constant grabbing of Violet’s face and disguising it as something he does because he cares for her. Violet’s perspective left me totally blindsided, which I guess is the point! You feel the gut-wrenching sense of shock and betrayal that she feels after her slow realisation of how he has changed throughout the book, but I really enjoyed being able to look back on what happened through another lens. (And Xaden calling him a rat made me laugh)
My romance-loving heart also loved Xaden’s POV as a tool to truly see what he was thinking and feeling as you don’t get a glimpse into it until near the end (makes sense as Violet herself doesn’t know, just nice to see that side as well!). Violet’s perspective shows him hating her, then somewhere through the year he starts developing feelings for her, but only because she starts liking him? Whereas Xaden tells her that he has had feelings from the moment he saw her, which she never picked up on as she was so busy with her own feelings and thinking he hated her. I just love the idea of him falling first and being soft for her

Ah...so good. What an enjoyable read. Moved between downtime and action. And not much of the MC being insecure...well, some, but it wasn't annoying. And those dragons are all bada$$es.
Second go through in Jan 2025 but listened to the graphic audiobook. Still so good and the sound effects were amazing!
