Listening the audiobook and I just wish we got Xaden’s perspective earlier on but it was good!

This one is hard to rate... the idea and world that is set up is genuinely interesting, but its the execution which falls a bit flat. I'd say its good for a quick, light read with a side of spice, but nothing deeper than that.

One of my reoccurring annoyances was the fact no one apparently thinks saddles are a good idea because the dragons and humans have their pride and ego. Yeah, I don't think holding on with your knees and thighs is going to save anyone when these dragons are the size of buildings and one quick turn can throw a rider off to their deaths. Not to mention how utterly shredded these people's inner thighs would be from scales that are incredibly hard and tough. But okay, Violet is the only one in existence to actually get a saddle. Because Tairn is the only dragon, despite repeatedly being called one of the most powerful in the entirety of Navarre almost, who actually accomidates their rider.

I also don't get the whole deal with the mind readers being brutally killed with no questions asked when Dain can with a touch read people's minds and their most recent memories and get a pass. It feels really odd and selective. The reasoning behind it makes it somehow worse... apparently its a security breach because mind readers can "access classified material." Then again there was a lot of world-building stuff that seemed not very well thought out.  If you don't think about it too much it works fine, any more thought and the whole thing falls apart.

That said, the dragons were fun, especially Tairn, and the Hunger Games esque trials were genuinely entertaining and tense at times. Even if trying to kill the riders seemed a bit counter productive in actually defending the realm...

Character wise I did enjoy Violet and Xaden. They were definitely the most fleshed out from the entire cast of characters we were introduced to. Their 'romance' was more lust than love though, which was admittedly a bit disappointing. Violet did have her struggles with her disability, but I felt it only came up when the author wanted some drama and tension in fights, because other than having a few snapped bones happen a bit more often than average and not being able to keep her seat on Tairn, she seemed pretty capable. Not to mention that her unique dragon scale armour gave her a LOT of very literal plot armour.
I do have to say I really loved Liam, so his death actually did make me emotional. I didn't appreciate that he came so close to dying anyway barely 100 pages prior only to anyway die though.

Overall, an easy read, but nothing particularly unique or worth the hype I've seen for this book.

I really need a good read now lol... 😅
