I get why people were so excited to read this, it's worth the hype. Lots of twisty plot, lots of spice, lovable characters, and just overall a very fun time.

GAHHHHH THIS IS SOOO GOOD.
It feels very 2010s dystopian. Like Divergent x How to Train Your Dragon fanfiction with lemons (iykyk)....but in all the best ways.
My first reaction was that this audiobook is LONG. My second reaction is 'oh my gosh i immediately like this'. The dragons and magic system are super cool. This felt both familiar and unique. I am PISSED I cannot read the sequel right now because DAMN this is good.
Holy found family. I loved how there were casual queer characters, nonbinary people and excellent disability rep and it was all just normalized. Loved. It. Literally stayed up wayyyy too late because I could NOT stop. I basically guess what would happen but was still totally shook.
Truly I love this book and stand by the 5⭐ but I have a few qualms: I was NOT ready for the sexy bits. I like a good romance, but also, I'm here for the dragons. The dragons are so so cool. (I love how they communicate!!) Honestly, I don't think explicit scenes added anything here or that we needed sex magic. I also was sort of confused--for such a long book, we skipped over lots of potential for dynamic relationships with friends, a view into her training or even a real idea of anyone's relationships with their families, which keeps this book from being quite as developed as you might want. Also, not enough dragon stuff.
All that being said, I can't wait for book 2. The standards are VERY high.
