It's poorly written. I feel like an editor never even bothered to skim the draft they were sent. It's incredibly repetitive, like the author assumes nobody was paying attention earlier. The repetitiveness results in the supposedly smart character seeming a little slow, and in one hilarious anime-style flashback scene.
At least there's no rape or homophobia.
