This moved GLACIALLY slowly. I understand that the Stratemeyer method was all about formulaic pacing, and this is an early enough ND book that it's very pure Stratemeyer, but holy moly. I think I'm just more accustomed to the formula used in the later books of the series and in the NDF/NDD iterations? There was just so much of this book that was Nancy being told that she couldn't go investigate for another three days, sorry! AND THEN WE SEE THE THREE DAYS.

I have to remind myself when I read the old Nancy Drew stories that they are for another time. They're so silly to a modern reader! But I enjoyed this mystery, as I always do when I read Nancy.
In this book, Nancy is invited to search for a missing message from the 1600s in a hollow oak in Illinois. She goes looking and of course finds more than she bargained for.
This book is amusing and fast paced, and I enjoyed reading it.

This was just a story about a glorified grave digging expedition and hidden treasure by a racist missionary 🙄 nothing redeeming at all. Clem was literally the only one who pointed out the hypocrisy of it all.

Reading this as an adult really puts things to a different perspective. I just relaized this series was created in the 1930's. When I was younger I thought they were going for a vintage vibe but literally this book IS vintage. It still was enjoyable though.
