This is an old school YA boy's book, as such it has several tropes that are still popular today among some groups:
* Country and small town folks are much more decent than corrupt city folks.
* There's only one religion, Protestant Christian.
* Fear of the other.
You can see the divisions that plague the USA in this list.

Not one of Meader's better books, it's a bit too formulaic with the hard working widow and the escape to the wholesome countryside.

These books always remind me of my father which is why I read one over the holidays.
