I love all the twists and turns and unexpected happenings. There is still some expected knowledge from the first Shannara trilogy, but not as much. Interesting characters and ideas.

Probably the Shannara book I liked best so far. It was nice to see the characters from the first book in this mini-series continue in the next - it definitely made the story more interesting as I had more invested in the characters.

One of the stronger early Shannara books. Some stuff here feels familiar (quest to get the Thing from the Bad Guy to Stop the Other Bad Guy), but the characters are richer than I expected—especially Walker Boh and Pe Ell. The magic feels genuinely magical here too. And there are surprising moments of darkness throughout that make this a worthy entry.

I really struggled with this one, and it took me a month to get through.

This novel had serious pacing issues. The beginning and the end were both pretty good, but the middle dragged, and I found myself heavily skim reading just to get through it.

I do have issues with the Shanara books in general. They are all pretty samey, and the original novel especially feels like a rip off of LOTR. The previous novel was actually pretty enjoyable and built up a fun cast of characters, and I had been looking forward to continuing the story. Sadly this one chose to focus on only a few of those characters and the questing just got tedious for me.

I’ll take a short break the will press on to the Elf Queen. Despite my issues with this novel, I do want to see this series out.

I was able to get through about a third of the book before I put it down for school, meaning for me that the some events in that part are blurred and somewhat remembered. As such, I'll do what I can to review what I actually remember.

It was interesting how the individual books in this tetralogy feature their own quests but still maintain the same over-arching story, with little snippets in between of the perspectives of other sets of characters on their own quests. Pertaining to Walker Boh's side, I'd say it was pretty good, all things considered. The book felt slow and static at times, though with these books I usually blame my powerful ability to become distracted for the sluggish effect. I felt like I knew each of the characters in this book pretty well, something I felt was lacking a couple books ago in Wishsong. When I'm reading it's usually hard for me to maintain how each character looks physically, so it was very beneficial to me that Brooks would give me a specific sense for each character to distinguish by. The quest was fascinating, so I won't spoil those details here. The payoff in the last fifth of the book was great, the fates of each of the characters justified. I'm excited to begin the next chapter of this series, Elf Queen of Shannara, pretty soon, once I get through a few other books I've been putting off for some time.

Thanks for reading this review, I hope you have a great day :)
