this book was a ROLLERCOASTER. i honestly hated it until the very end, not because the writing was bad, i loved the writing, but just because the story just kept on getting worse and worse until the last 70 pages or so when I finally enjoyed reading it. Honestly even tho it was such an emotional read, i think everyone should give it it a try

This was a really great memoir. Jeannette Walls writes from the perspective she had at the time so it starts with child naivety about her parents and gradually she grows up and realises how neglectful and irresponsible they are. That means it's not a reflective memoir but more a collection of stories which span her childhood and early adulthood. Walls does a brilliant job at conveying her love for her family alongside her disappointment and anger at the choices they made. There are quite a few amusing anecdotes but the reality of her confusing, traumatic childhood comes through.

It's hard to say I liked this book because there was so much trauma and disappointment throughout. I found myself being disgusted and angry but I couldn't put it down. Jeannette's story is heartbreaking and inspiring.
