This is so sad and I definitely needed refreshers and needed to stop 🛑 because it was a bit too much & rough with  what the two estranged sisters go through  essentially earlier in the lineage slavery line.

This thread of stories was so powerful!!! The format kept me engaged throughout the whole thing, writing was perfect, characters felt so real. Super compelling read.

I wanted to love this book. I really did.

There were aspects which I loved: the storytelling, the contrasting writing styles between narratives; the intricate ways that trauma and injustice trickled down through generations; the complex moral predicaments characters found themselves in. But there were also aspects that I hated: the many unnecessary sentences devoted to sexualization of women in the male narratives; the heavy-handed metaphors that left little room for interpretation; the focus on romantic and sexual relationships, while familial and friendly relationships were sidelined.

This is undoubtedly an important and impressive book, but the flaws and shortcomings distracted me from an otherwise powerful story.
