Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️
Tropes: Grumpy x Sunshine, small town romance, guy falls first, enemies-friends-lovers.
POV: Third person

We follow Piper - the “It Girl.’ Known for throwing the most outrageous parties and being a bit of a good time in Los Angeles. She was raised by her Mum and Step-Dad in Bel-Air with more money than sense.

After throwing an impromptu party that ended in her being arrested her Step-Father cuts her off, sending her off to Westport for three months to live in her late Father’s pub and see what life is like for the majority of people. Cue my sexy bearded fisherman.

Sea-Captain and king crab fisherman Brendan is a widowed fisherman who was born and raised in Westport. It’s all he’s ever known and that’s just how he likes it. He is a man who lives a strictly scheduled and routine life - after all strong routine is what keeps his crew and him safe on the water. He is content eating his fish and chips on a Monday night and spending is life out at see. That is until he meets Piper. She is from a different world and completely out of his league. So why is he so damned drawn to her?

I have read a few Tessa Bailey books and I thought she might just not have been for me as an author. Then I read It Happened One Summer and fell in love with this quaint little fishing town.

I didn’t know if I was going to get on with this book because I did take a few chapters to warm to Piper. But after she stripped off the fake exterior she was just a sweet girl who wanted to feel seen.

I can be in a room full of people that I know and still not feel like I belong.

Brendan on the other hand. I absolutely adored Brendan from the get go❤️. Rough round the edges, a real man’s man but a big teddy bear inside. What more could you want?

I fell in love with the characters, the town and all the townies! It was just so wholesome.

But I really want to pick up Hook, Line, and Sinker - RIGHT NOW!! I need Fox and Hannah’s story. Hannah was a sweetheart and I love me a bit of a player being tamed.

I cant say I liked this book because I didn't like every element. I like a good number of them but some of the things just... got to me.

Some things I liked:

1) Piper. I liked Piper... a lot more than I thought I would. After I checked this out, I saw this advertised as kind of a Schitt's Creek inspired book and how Alexis and Piper are parallels. Well, I'm gonna admit, I didn't like Schitt's Creek and I didn't like Alexis. So I was kind of hesitant and came in with a bit of a negative attitude but honestly it was way better than my mind said it was going to be.

2) I adore me a good sister set (or any siblings) in fiction that doesn't come off as totally cringy. Hannah and Piper have such good sibling chemistry I love them.

3) Uhmmm, can we talk about the hotel bed scene. Woo boo! I shivered a little at that. Where he yanks her head back, mmmm. That will get me every time.

4) I liked that when it was found out Brendan used to be married, he wasn't just like "but my dead wife" the whole book because I hate that with a passion. It's just not my thing in a romance. It makes me DNF a book.

Now... some things I didn't like:

1) Most of the sex scenes. Sorry but vaginal orgasms are like myth to me, I've never had it happen and when a book is like "well I met the right man and now he does it" like... ok sure Jan. Also Piper sticking a finger in the butt without lube. Ouch. Made my butthole clench.

Also this goes to Tessa Bailey personally: please, please, please, don't ever describe a man's genitals as a "full, smooth dome" again. I needed to physically step away from the book when I read that.

2) Brendan as a concept was better than Brendan written. He goes from hardass to simp to Mr.-I-Just-Wanna-Fight. It's draining and boring. Hot Fisherman? Yes please! Brendan? I'll pass...

3) The ending was very, Hallmark movie esque. I just the whole "oh it's just a series of oopsie coincidences" and how they conveniently have no service and it ends in disaster. And how the girls have no idea that the rig caught on fire and now the entire town (except the rude ex-FIL) is now not there. And then Piper actually leaves for LA. And then Brendant gets a plane there perfectly. Just ugh.

Anyway. The book was fine. It was just not my cup of tea I think.

I loved the first-half of the book, but the second-half was questionable at best. The relationship just developed way too quickly for my liking, and the whole misunderstanding felt incredibly off character and avoidable. I also found several characters to be a bit petty… but I’ll probably read the second since I really liked Hannah. (Also just a side note, but I’m beginning to wonder if pet names just aren’t for me because I wanted to cringe every time ‘baby’ was used)

Good beach read, Sometimes a bit too kitschy for my liking, especially in word choice. Story was fine, nothing too dramatic. I liked the wild-child trope and how the main characters choice of words (even in thoughts) changed as she changed with her environment
