Started off really slow, but picked up toward the middle and end. I liked how twisty the family relations are in this, the very serious treatment of how belief and reality and the supernatural are intertwined. I wish there was more ambiguity toward the end, about what is reality and what is belief (which turns it to reality). The insistence that “this is a thing that actually happens” makes a poorer case for itself than letting the readers decide either way. The ending was fine but nothing spectacular.
Spoiler That her grandfather was an actual monster rather than just a terrible person perhaps muted my enjoyment, I felt like it sidestepped the vital essence of what makes domestic abuse horrific. The whole throughline with the activists also fell through quite a bit once she met her aunt. The epilogue looking toward a romance for Carrie felt unnecessary, given that so much of her story tries to drive the point that she does not want to be in a relationship.

Enjoyed most of it, but a few characters and plot points were tidied up too quickly to make the story work for my preference. The creep factor of her visions was great, though.
