One of the few books I've read in paperback, ebook, and audio. It might feel a bit cartoony after having read the Stephen Sears book about Gettysburg last year, but it's still a good read. God help them rebs when Chamberlain gets that dog in him.

The suffering is completed.

What a fascinating look into the PEOPLE of the battle of Gettysburg! Shaara, with vivid description and good source material, gives a look into the personalities, motivations, backstories, questions, misgivings, misunderstandings, leadership styles, and heroic braveries of the men who fought and led the battle. I have a new understanding of the Civil War and can see why Winston Churchill called it "the noblest...of all the great conflicts.".

It was an excellent book and the characters were believable. But I had one problem. The author described many of the characters thinking war was "beautiful" and couldn't wait for the next battle. I was in the military and NO ONE thought a battle was beautiful. Duty yes, but looking forward to a battle or engagement? Never. And I don't think that has changed from the first battle in history until now. The author had no idea what it is to be a soldier. I know honor was a huge thing then but more than one odd suicidal man hoping to be in the front line is absurd. Otherwise the book took you to the battle and that in itself was an experience but not a beautiful one.

A wonderful historical fiction. Beautifully written. A must read!
