Great historical fiction about the battle of Gettysburg, a topic about which I have no interest. Very humanizing and sad.

Michael Shaara illuminates the events, the places, and most notably, the people involved in the most monumental Civil War battle. By following different figures involved in different levels of the conflict on both sides, we get an intimate look at the motivations, emotions, and questions that surrounded the battle that most thoroughly shaped the course of the war. Shaara sent me scrambling for maps, photos, art, books, and films that would help me understand the conflict more deeply.

I read this when I was 12 or so and I'm so glad I re-read it now with my book club because it is one of the best books I've ever read. It's also probably the saddest.

While probably not for everyone, this is a fascinating look at the Battle of Gettysburg. The evaluations of different decisions made and different personalities at work are certainly eye-opening. It brought the history to life.

That said, if you don't typically find history interesting, this might not be for you. The descriptions and characters can be difficult to follow at times, and there's a lot of talk about war strategies and battleground maneuvers that some might find tedious.

I listened to this book on audio. As is the case with other Civil War history that I have read, I tend to get a little bogged down with the minute details about the battles. This book focuses on the battle at Gettysburg, and there were a few places in the book where I did get bogged down with the details about their positions and what not, but those parts didn't go on forever. This book is fiction, but the real beauty of the book is the conversations imagined between characters and the voicing of their thoughts about what was going on and what might have been in their minds about this terrible conflict going on in the country at the time. It was good food for thought about where the minds of the soldiers on both sides were in the midst of this terrible war, and for that reason it was worth the read.
