An almost fable-like story that recounts the brutal realities and violence surrounding a druglord/kingpin and his henchmen told mostly from the perspective of Lobo, an outsider, an artist, a musician who slowly works his way into the inner ranks. It is undoubtedly beautifully translated but I did find it a tad too abstract, poetic at the expense of lacking clarity, and I just couldn't fully appreciate or comprehend its depth.

Had to read this for my job and the translation was kinda bad. It was hard to follow, but I like the idea of the book. Would have rather read it in Spanish lol.

Herrera is such a master of this concise, immediate story-telling, and fills it with so much introspection and commentary without adding bulk, I'm just amazed with every book. I particularly liked the metaphors of structure here.

This is a re read.

If you have 2 1/2 hours to do an audiobook, Please consider this one.

Yuri Herrera is one of those storytellers that with his stunning prose is able to paint a beautiful picture of a cruel reality.
