I really liked this until we got to the insensitive Ganesh-inspired Broknar. Also, there is this part when Astra first meets the alien Poglites:

"The first alien looked down and twiddled one of the dials on the front of his dirty spacesuit. Or was it a her? It was hard to tell, but he seemed sort of bossy, so Astra decided he must be a boy." - p. 105

This was a funny, silly, delightful read! Excellent for any young reader who likes space, silly books, or too much cake!

Just what it says. Cakes. In Space. If you are expecting something else, go elsewhere. If you are looking for Cakes in Space, you could not get better!! Multi-dimensional female main characters FTW!!!

A truly funny and family friendly novel. It can be read by teenagers, also by children. I hope I'll find some more. I personally read it on the Anybooks app (a free app with free downloadable or even perfect readable books in a nice and cozy format). The only con is that... it exists only on Android. So if you want free amazing books or to "try" a book as a free sample without looking for it too much on the internet, you can try Anybooks.

This was such a silly book full of humorous language and great pictures. Astra is going to live on a new planet with her family, but before they can reach it, chaos strikes as evil cakes infiltrate the spaceship! It’s up to Astra and her robot friend, to save the day.

The book would be perfect for a bubbly year 2 class who would enjoy creating their own space adventures and making warning posters to alert people to the dangers posed by the cakes.

I want to start by saying that I read and absolutely ADORED Oliver and the Seawigs.

This one was disappointing. I had so many expectations because of how good Oliver was, how original and surprising and hilarious and refreshing it was. Cakes in space, in comparaison was... a bit boring really. The characters weren't as endearing, the story wasn't as fast-paced and interesting, the writing wasn't as funny.

I still think kids would love it (KILLER CUPCAKES for god's sake), and it's a good first read, but I'd definitely recommend Philip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre's other works.

Great fun and a definite possible guided reading for fluent readers in LKS2 or Y2. Fun, hilarious, deeply imaginative and does not take itself seriously at all. Quite the opposite, in fact.
