This is the most insert-yourself-as-the mc fantasy I've finished in a long time. All I could think the entire time was "this is Red Queen if you strip the good writing, thorough characters, the actual plot and make the mc a skeletal, starving, wetblanket brunette every single boy she comes in contact with is unfathomably enraptured by". Maybe it really amps up later in the series. Maybe she gets a personality later. I might try to slog through and see after I look up more reviews.

So far this series is really good! I think this first book is a lot of world building and character introductions. The middle of the book seems like the beginning. I am very glad there are more books to expand on Juliette and Warner. I so far don't trust Adam and love Kenji and Juliette. I think the world building works very well it just means the into is super slow.

Aaron Warner after the first one hundred pages is just chef kiss. Adam doesn’t know what consent means.

This book is best read when in middle school or with the intention to not think too critically about it.
For a dystopia, the world building is very underwhelming, and for a romance, both of Juliette’s love interests are like walking Red Flags (not to mention they are only in love with what she represents to them tbh).
However, I really enjoyed Juliette’s character and her development! She’s consistent in her personality and, in the face of literally everyone and their dog telling her what to do, she calculates all her options and uses her own judgement to make her choices. That’s rare for a female character! I found her sense of loyalty and trust issues to be incredibly consistent and relatable! Her POV really elevates this series.
