I rather liked the plot and characters of this one. Also it felt like the author is really starting to perfect his style in this one. In the first 3 the author seemed a little too concerned with making puns.

I have to start this review by saying that I am not and have never been a fan of Terry Pratchett. (I know, controversial.) I read this book about six years ago because my then-partner was Pratchett-obsessed and desperate for me to get into Discworld. And man, did I struggle with it. It was a real slog for me to get through. I didn’t like the humour, I didn’t appreciate the themes, I didn’t care about the characters. I just wanted it to be over. Reading it under duress, I think, made me bitter towards it and I ended up hating it and coming to the conclusion that Terry Pratchett was just massively overrated. Of course, what I diplomatically said to my partner was, “I just don’t think Pratchett is for me”.
Six years later, I wanted to see if reading a book by choice and not under duress changes my feelings about it. I can categorically say that it does. This time, I smiled. This time, I let out the occasional ‘heh’. This time, I enjoyed Death as a character. Did I love the book? No. It creeps over the line of being just a bit too silly for me. I’m still not certain that Pratchett is for me. But I’m more willing to be proven wrong on that than I was six years ago, and I will now concede that overrated and Terry Pratchett do not belong in the same sentence. Just don’t tell my ex that I said so.

I didn’t expect to *love* this but I think it might be one of my all time favs. Just something so uncomplicatedly cozy about how Pratchett writes, even when it’s largely about the crushing forward march of time. Feel good and comfy without really meaning to be, I read it in one sitting.
