Gevatter Tod

Terry Pratchett

4.13 AVERAGE

Mort is an unassuming young man who becomes Death’s Apprentice when he cannot find any other work. The book follows Mort as he enters the world of Death and learns his trade.

As the book progresses, there is a lot of character development with Mort becoming more confident and competent, Death questions the meaning of death and explores new careers, which was hilarious. Ysabel, Death’s adopted daughter, who was previously a bit psychopathic, becomes more human as she develops her relationship with Mort and expresses her feelings with regards to being brought up in Death’s timeless realm.

I really enjoyed the plot in this book and the consequences of messing with fate. It was clever how people struggled to remember the Princess because she was technically dead.

As always, Mr Pratchett has written a ‘laugh out loud’ funny book exploring some interesting topics of life. It was lovely seeing Rincewind again, who was hilarious as always. Death is such a great nuanced character and it was great to see more of him.

Overall, I am really enjoying the Discworld books. It’s my goal to read them all and my target is two per month. I really look forward to these reads as i know I am going to love them.

Recommended by a friend in college. Never read it! But then a coworker who is reading the entire Discworld suggested this as a place to begin. It was really good! Clever. Very British. I listened to it and the narrators were incredible. I don’t know why, but I’ve always loved a book where the main character is death. Always so interesting how authors portray it.

If you know, and like, British humor, then this is a great read.

It’s a real toss up between Mort and Guards! For my favourite discworld book, I think it comes down to which one I’ve read more recently

Very fun. A good one to read out loud.
I definitely won’t be opposed to reading more of Terry Pratchett in the future (although it may be a bit; I think I’ll have to be in a specific mood for it).

While the humor and idea of the book definitely took front seat in this book (and the characters taking more of a backseat), it wasn’t near as extreme as Hitchhiker’a Guide, which I did *not* enjoy very much. I felt like Mort had a story and characters to go along with the humor.
(I know, I know- this isn’t a very popular opinion. Don’t @ me.
