I like the first four books, though the David angst was starting to wear on me.
I struggled in the beginning because I thought the Nine were quite charming and didn't want any of them to die, but I'm a big girl so I persevered. I struggled with Stevie, a bright, interesting, relatably anxious girl becoming a "boyfriend girl". I got the hint of that in Box in the Woods, but the rest of the story made up for it. This one, where she's a shell of her former self because she misses her (shitty) boyfriend, sucks. I've never been a David fan tbh. What made me finally put the book down was the reveal that Stevie's arc in this book would be her having sex with David. The conversation with Janelle around page 75 made me want to peel my skin off. I can handle sex in YA books, I can handle anxious weird people having sex, but the lead up to this and the subsequent chapter completely ruined it for me. Ugh. Huge letdown after the rest of the series being so compelling.

I enjoy these books. Don't love that it ended on a character cliffhanger and I'm not thrilled that the next book is TBD (maybe in 2025?). I still enjoy these characters.

I love this series. I love the author. I love the narrator. I hate this book.
Stevie has always been a little selfish and single-minded when it comes to solving mysteries, but she’s a total asshole to her friends in this book.I spent half of it anxious as hell about the fallout of her lies. And then Janelle just forgives her without question? Janelle, who up to this point has not hesitated to call Stevie out when she’s wrong.
The book stripped away the wonderful characters that the first four books built and left Janelle as a paper-flat character who’s only there to serve Stevie.
I love Maureen Johnson, but the entire time I read it, I was thinking that it had to be a ghost writer.
