"Death. Plague. Destruction. Torture. Beheadings. Merry old England."
Stevie's off the England and throws her life into chaos as per usual.
Can't wait for the next book in the series.

Nine Liars is the 5th book in the Truly Devious series and reads like a classic Sherlock mystery- with a Gen Z cast.

I have enjoyed the series thus far for the mystery aspects, and this book was no different. Right from the beginning, I was dying to know what really happened to The Nine in 1995. There were clues throughout the book pointing to what happened and allowing the reader to come to their own conclusions, which was very enjoyable.

Maureen Johnson does a great job of creating characters who are not stereotypical, without being over the top “quirky” to the point of unbelievability. I do like the characters for the most part. They are all overtly Gen Z with strong political beliefs that shine through in the books, though, and many aspects could easily come across as offensive to someone with more conservative ideals.

One thing that continues to bug me throughout the series is Stevie’s panic attacks- I suffer from anxiety and panic attacks and did not find the portrayal in this series to be realistic, especially in Nine Liars. I guess everyone’s mental illness is different, though…

David is easily the worst character, I have the urge to skip every part with him in it. Not a fan of the romance between him and Stevie, and his actions in Nine Liars are a big part of why I rated this 3 stars instead of 4 or 5.

Overall, the story itself is an enjoyable, cozy mystery that keeps you invested from start to finish. I’m excited for the next installment in the Truly Devious series, but definitely hoping for less David next time!
