ace rep!! was already my favorite in the series but this was sweet
4.5*
I have had so much fun with this series, and can’t believe I’m officially done! I really enjoyed this one! I had no idea throughout of what could possibly be going on. I enjoyed seeing familiar characters in a new setting! Also THE ENDING

i had struggled a bit to get into this one, but i dont think its the fault of the book as im lowkey in a bit of a slump. i looooove a little english murder mystery, and the way that johnson intertwines cold cases with current ones is always a wonderful experience. i also have to commend the fact that johnson was dedicated enough to switch the diction to match english slang during the flashback scenes; it wasn't something that i was expecting, but it helped with immersion. so much of this book was centered around stevie's development which i was excited for! it was very coming-of-age which i appreciated, and the struggle between her education & being a detective was deeply interesting, and im excited to see where that leads us in this next book. that being said, i didn’t like janelle's attitude twords stevie in their conversations about college. i understand where she was coming from because she's worried about her friends future, but i don't get why she wouldn't just talk to stevie about why she was struggling with the process rather than being judgemental. that being said, i was very happy with how mature they both were during the aftermath, as i was literally so horrified it was going to blow up in their faces i couldn't bring myself to read it. I also did appreciate the healthy sex talk in this book, although it was a bit much in the beginning.
the mystery itself was deeply interesting, espeically given the title; when presented with something like nine liars, you tend to go in not trusting anyone. you're presented with a messy, stormy night in the middle of nowhere, england, and you get an axe murder! no screaming, no witnesses, no evidence.the aspect of the disappearance also made everything feel more urgent, as did the time-frame for them to leave london. stevie deciding to lie to her friends about getting permission to go to the manor also made me very sad, espeically because of the tension that gets added into the group. her lying to her friends made me just as tense as the murder. so many of stevie's actions in this book are reflective of adhd/autistic traits, and it truthfully makes her more understandable to me by viewing her through that lense. i was not that surprised that peter was the murderer, but the situation was much more complex than i was thinking. the whole time i was focused on trying to remember who took sebtastian's keys, but i didnt think about how they might've been replaced. overall, it kept me on my toes though, constantly going back and forth about who might've done what. the twist about the weed was EXCELLENT though; giving characters a purpose to look out for each other, cleaning up a crime scene just to keep everyone together. just great.
i almost dnf'd this book not because it was bad, but because i found the relationship aspects stressful but i still wanted to finish this. im so sad that i wasnt in the right headspace to fully enjoy this book, because im normally able to blast through johnson's work, but I'm very happy that I was able to pull through. being left on that cliffhanger, knowing that another book will come out, it's just so stressful. im also very excited to learn more about the david thing, because there has to be something more going on, probably with his dad. i think the next two (? is it two left? at least? idk) will probably be interconnected, tacking this issue... whatever it is. very glad that I don't have to say goodbye to these characters just yet!

The main character was insufferable at some parts!!
I wish the writer didn’t make her that way especially on the fifth book 😒

I absolutely adore Maureen Johnson’s writing style and LOVED the “Truly Devious” books leading up to this.
This exceeded my expectations just as the other ones have, nothing felt reused the mystery felt new and crazy!

I’d like to ask the author to be one of my pallbearers so she can let me down one last time
